New York Jets guard Kelechi Osemele will undergo shoulder surgery, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. He has been out since the Jets lost 30-14 to the New England Patriots during Week 3.

The shoulder injury that Osemele had suffered occurred during a full-padded practice and the extent of the injury was not initially known. To make matters worse, he was also dealing with knee soreness before the shoulder injury happened.

Jets head coach Adam Gase provided Zach Braziller of the New York Post with an update about how the injury impacted his plans to test different offensive line combinations.

“[Wednesday] kind of threw things for a little bit of a loop with when he goes down and now we kind of have to shuffle some things around,” Gase said.

The loss of Osemele has forced the Jets to start backup guard Alex Lewis in his absence. The expectation was that Lewis had actually overtaken the starting role and that Osemele would have been in a backup role upon his return.

It was a real struggle for Jets' offensive line while Osemele was in the lineup. As Braziller noted, they had allowed 13 sacks and the running attack was only averaging 3.0 yards per carry. While there were struggles across the board for the Jets in their Week 6 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, their impressive 24-22 win over the Dallas Cowboys displayed real progress.

The Jets acquired Smith during the offseason in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens. The original plan that the Ravens had was to waive Smith, but ultimately, the Jets were willing to send a conditional 2020 seventh-round pick and that was enough to complete the deal.
