Most teams are skeptical when trading with the New England Patriots in any circumstance. On the other hand, Adam Gase isn't afraid to do business with the Patriots and isn't fearful of being rejected.

“I said that to Joe [Douglas] when he told me he was going to call them,” Gase told ESPN, referring to his general manager. “I said, ‘The organizations haven't traded in a long time.' He goes, ‘We should call. The worst thing they can do is say no.' I was like, ‘Great'.”

The Jets traded for Demaryius Thomas earlier in the week from the Patriots for a 2021 sixth-round pick. With the trade being confirmed, it ends a 28-year drought of the Jets and Patriots negotiating a trade with each other.

Along with the 28-year drought, the trade that sends Thomas to New York means that Bill Belichick has now orchestrated a trade with all 32 teams in the NFL now. The majority of the NFL tries to avoid making calls to division rivals but Belichick makes moves that can benefit his team; regardless of what team is on the other end.

New York was in need of a receiver after Quincy Enunwa was ruled out for the remainder of the season. Therefore, Gase decided to take a shot in the dark and have Joe Douglas make a call to the Patriots.

With New England bringing in Antonio Brown, they no longer had room for Thomas in the offense. Gase has prior experience with Thomas when they were both with the Denver Broncos.

In a matter of a week, Thomas has gone from catching passes from Tom Brady to Trevor Siemian; with Sam Darnold missing time because of having mono. At the least, the Jets have now shown the Patriots that they are willing to do negotiations with them.
