New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold is out indefinitely with mono and will not be playing in the Jets' Week 2 matchup against the Cleveland Browns on Monday night, but head coach Adam Gase quickly put the kibosh on talk that Darnold could end up on the injured reserve list.

“It’s not going to be that long,” Gase said, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

The good news for Darnold is that New York has a bye in Week 4, so assuming Darnold sits in Weeks 2 and 3, he will get an extra week of rest ahead of Week 5.

Of course, whether or not Darnold plays in Week 5 remains to be seen.

Mono tends to be a long illness, and the main concern is that it enlarges the spleen and puts it at a higher risk of rupture.

Darnold completed 28 of his 41 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown during his team's Week 1 loss to the Buffalo Bills last Sunday.

The 22-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Southern California, was originally selected by the Jets with the third overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.

He made 13 starts during his rookie campaign, throwing for 2,865 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions while completing 68.3 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 84.9.

New York had playoff hopes coming into this season, but obviously, with Darnold being on the shelf for the foreseeable future, the Jets' postseason chances have taken a rather big hit.

Now, the fact that New York blew a 16-0 lead in its loss to Buffalo looms even larger.
