New York Jets tight end Chris Herndon is using the lost 2019 as a learning experience, with the hope that it will end up making him better in the long run.

Herndon was suspended the first four games of the 2019 season because of a substance abuse policy violation. When he returned to the team, he injured his hamstring. He finally made it onto the field in Week 10, but he hurt his ribs and was put on injured reserve:

“It wasn’t ideal how everything played out,” Herndon said, via the team’s website. “I wish it could’ve gone the opposite way, but for me, it was definitely a year where I was forced to sit down and really just learn. [I] use it as a learning experience — how quick one injury, one decision, how fast things can be taken from you. Also, just learn to appreciate those things because like they say, you never know how much you miss something until it’s gone. It was a big learning year for me, but I’m ready.”

During the 2018 season, Herndon caught 39 passes for 502 yards and four touchdowns. Herndon was overlooked heading into the 2019  season, but the hope inside the Jets locker room was that he could take the next step and become an upper-level tight end in the league.

No one is talking about him now, but he is healthy and ready to have a big year. It's still to be seen if he will live up to his expectations, but if he can take the step forward, the Jets offense should also improve.
