Count New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees among those who think New York Jets signal-caller Sam Darnold will be special.

Following the Saints' preseason win over the Jets on Saturday night, Brees had this to say about Darnold:

“I’ve been impressed with him just from what I’ve seen and the way he’s handled everything,” Brees said, according to Andy Vasquez of NorthJersey.com. “It’s a tough position, a lot of hype and expectations, and I think he’s handled it well. He seems like an extremely sharp kid who has a really bright future.”

Darnold had a solid showing in the exhibition game, completing eight of his 13 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown.

Brees thinks that as long as New York continues to put pieces around him, he will succeed.

“He’s only going to continue to improve and get better and better as they build this team around him,” Brees said. “Obviously, he’s got a ton of upside and a ton of opportunity.”

Darnold, who played his collegiate football at the University of Southern California, was originally selected by the Jets with the third overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.

He made 13 starts during his rookie campaign, throwing for 2,865 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions while completing 57.7 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 77.6.

However, the Jets won just four games, leading to the firing of head coach Todd Bowles after four years. New York then proceeded to replace Bowles with Adam Gase earlier this offseason.

The Jets have not made the playoffs since the 2010 campaign.
