The New York Jets made all kinds of headlines in the past week, ranging from their star player on defense to the owner turned U.S. ambassador.
Jets owner Woody Johnson, who serves in a diplomatic role in the Trump administration to the United Kingdom, was in hot water due to allegations of corruption along with a separate story accusing the Johnson & Johnson heir of racism and sexism.
New York's general manager Joe Douglas—who executed the Jamal Adams traded on Saturday—commented on the developing Johnson situation, which has led to calls for the ambassador's resignation. According to Douglas, via ESPN's Rich Cimini, brother Christopher Johnson (acting Jets owner) told the GM Woody “would never make comments like that of any sort” and “that's not what we're about, and that's not what the Johnson family is about.”
The Jets earlier released an official statement denying Johnson's alleged comments, furthering the strange situation as Monday saw Douglas intimate Chris Johnson opposing the accusations of workplace misconduct.
The bigger headline, of course, was Douglas sending the All-Pro safety Adams to the Seattle Seahawks for defensive back Bradley McDougald and, chiefly, a pair of future first-round picks and a third-round pick.
Adams and the Jets feuded for the better part of the NFL's offseason. The rising fourth-year safety had engaged the Jets on contract negotiations (roughly a year before the traditional conversations begin), but when contract talks stalled, Adams pushed and leaked information about supposed locker-room turmoil, pointing blame at soon-to-be second-year Jets head coach Adam Gase.
Nevertheless, the Jets are just trying to escape the headlines before training camp.
