New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold is ailing from a sprained AC joint in his shoulder, meaning Joe Flacco will get the nod against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 5.

Flacco has not started a game in nearly a full calendar year, but he said he views the Jets-Cardinals game as an opportunity to prove he can still be a starter in the NFL.

“I think I’d be lying if I were to deny that. I want to play quarterback in this league. . . . I’m sure people have opinions on those things . . . I think I have a lot left,” Joe Flacco said, via SNY.

The 35-year-old spent the first 11 years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens, but the last two seasons have seen Flacco replaced with younger quarterbacks.

Lamar Jackson took over for Flacco after the latter went 4-5 in his first nine starts during the 2019 season. Flacco was given the chance to start for the Denver Broncos last year, but he went just 2-6 and dealt with injuries before eventually giving way to Drew Lock.

Needless to say, the Jets would love to see Flacco excel under center.

New York is 0-4 to start the year after a whirlwind of an offseason that saw the Jets trade All-Pro safety Jamal Adams to the Seattle Seahawks. Rumors have swirled regarding the status of head coach Adam Gase, and Sam Darnold has struggled to build on his promising sophomore season through the first four weeks.

Flacco will have his work cut out for him. The Jets have a number of injuries at the skill positions and on the offensive line, and the veteran will need protection and playmaking given a lack of mobility in the pocket.

Nevertheless, Flacco feels this is a chance to build something in the latter stages of his NFL career.
