New York Jets quarterback Joe Flacco has come in to be the backup to Sam Darnold, but he doesn't see the rest of his career being spent as a backup. Flacco has started 171 games in his career. He believes that at some point he can be the starting quarterback again in the NFL.

“Oh, for sure,” the new Jets QB said during a video chat with reporters via Darryl Slater of NJ.com. “I obviously still believe that I’m a starting quarterback. You never know what three years down the line is going to look like. I still have that confidence — and I still have the want-to, to do that.”

Joe Flacco is 35 years old, coming off neck surgery. It's going to be hard going forward for a team to trust him to be the starting quarterback. If Darnold was to go down with injury, and Flacco stayed healthy and played well, maybe that would be enough to get another shot.

Even though the long term goal is to become a starter again, right now he is happy to be Darnold's backup and a part of the New York Jets.

“It’s where I am right now,” he said. “And I’m glad to be on a team playing football in some capacity. My role is to help the team get better and to help a young quarterback see things as clearly as possible, and help him on his journey to being a longtime NFL quarterback.”

Having an experienced quarterback sitting behind Darnold will also be good to help the young quarterback.
