Twelve-year veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, who recently agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the New York Jets, will not be ready for the Sept. 13 season opener because of his repaired neck.
In a recent interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Flacco explained that he doesn't have a timetable to return from his neck injury.
Flacco recently underwent surgery for a herniated disk; and it’s still unclear when he’ll be able to return to live-contact football. The 35-year-old is coming off a disappointing year with the Denver Broncos that ended with a neck injury. Flacco played in only eight games, going 2-6. In those eight games, Flacco recorded 1,822 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 65.3 percent of his passes.
Nevertheless, with the Jets, he’ll serve primarily as a backup to Sam Darnold. Additionally, the Jets will be hoping he’ll be a mentor for Darnold, who is also coming off a disappointing season.
This past season, Darnold threw for 3,024 yards, 19 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 13 games. However, with a veteran presence like Flacco in his corner, he should have a better season.
As for the Jets, they’ll be seeking to make the playoffs for the first time in 10 seasons. However, their season will ultimately depend on Darnold’s performance.
