The New York Jets have opted to secure quarterback Joe Flacco as the backup to Sam Darnold under center going into the 2020 NFL season. It seems his new deal has come laced with incentives.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Jets signed Flacco to a favorable contract that will allow them to get plenty of bang for their buck:

The one-year, $1.5 million deal Joe Flacco signed with the Jets yesterday includes $550K guaranteed — his salary if he lands on IR, per source. Else:

$1.05M base salary
$450K in per-game active bonuses
$3M in incentives

This will be the first time in Flacco's 11-year career that he will be going into the season as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart. He signed with the Denver Broncos last year to serve as their starter once his tenure with the Baltimore Ravens came to an end.

A neck injury during the 2019 campaign landed Flacco on injured reserve and spurred the Broncos to go the rest of the way with quarterback Drew Lock. Although he is now slated to back up Darnold with the Jets, the veteran appears to be confident that he still has plenty left in the tank.

Regardless, Flacco has already openly embraced the prospect of taking on a mentorship role for Darnold and this could help pay huge dividends for the latter's development under center. Of course, it is still safe to assume he will be looking for ways to contribute in order for those incentives to come his way. Time will tell how things develop in New York with the Jets.
