Per Brian Costello of the New York Post, Joe Namath likes what he saw from New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold last season. He's excited that they seem to be heading in the right direction.

He added a bit of incredulity at the end, stating “I can only hope” with a smile.

“Broadway” Joe Namath was one of the best quarterbacks in pro-football over 40 years ago. The Hall of Famer appeared in five Pro Bowls and was named to one All-Pro team, as well as winning multiple awards in his illustrious career.

The former Jet led the entire league in passing yards three times. Even though he threw many interceptions over his entire career, his ability to get it done in the clutch. He had 15 total game-winning drives in his entire career.

For the modern-day New York Jets, rookie quarterback Sam Darnold provided some hope for the future to come. Through 13 games, he had a 4-9 record. He threw for 2,865 yards with 17 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. His completion percentage was around 57.7 percent and his quarterback rating sat at about 47.9.

Though these numbers aren't very impressive, Darnold did improve as the season progressed. His last three games he threw for five touchdowns with no interceptions averaging 253 yards per game. He showed more confidence and intelligence in his overall decision making.

The Jets on the season finished 4-12 and were last in the AFC East Division. They ended up firing their head coach Todd Bowles and bringing in former Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase to lead their team moving forward.
