The New York Jets are almost surely taking a quarterback with the No. 3 pick in the upcoming NFL draft. They’ve been strongly linked with reigning Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield, who is, if not their top option, then at least one of the top two.

If Mayfield does end up in New York, he’ll have one big fan cheering him on in legendary Jets quarterback Joe Namath, who called Mayfield the “most outrageous” quarterback among the four consensus top QB prospects, which also includes Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, and Josh Rosen.

“I haven't met them, but I've watched them and the most outrageous, so to speak, that I've seen has been Mayfield,” Namath said per ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

Namath claims to have caught a bit of Mayfield in college and was particularly impressed with his performance in a losing effort against Georgia in the College Football Playoff. He downplayed Mayfield’s relatively small stature, and instead highlighted the Sooner’s many positive traits such as his accuracy, intensity, and hustle, not to mention his overall “swagger.”

“I'm not as big on the outward swagger, so to speak, but the confidence, the leadership qualities … and that damn confidence, man. Don't tell me I can't do it, I'm gonna get it done,” Namath said.

It’s quite a glowing endorsement for Mayfield to be praised so highly by a legend in Namath. Broadway Joe was also accurate in his assessment of Mayfield, whose charisma certainly stands out among the group of the four top QBs. The Jets have likely factored that confidence highly in their evaluation of Mayfield and see it as a sign that he can handle the bright lights of New York.

Namath probably won’t be the only Jets fan celebrating if they do end up with Mayfield. They should hope the Browns don’t actually consider taking him No. 1 so he can fall into their lap at No. 3.
