The New York Jets knew they were taking a quarterback in the 2018 NFL Draft. The team had a need at the position with plenty of options at their disposal come draft day, especially after trading up to grab the third overall pick.

Ultimately, the Jets had a stroke of luck with the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants passing on the opportunity to take USC's Sam Darnold. Cleveland took Baker Mayfield out of Oklahoma while the Giants elected to go with a running back in Penn State's Saquon Barkley.

Darnold was there for the taking at No. 3, and New York didn't hesitate, and despite rumors of Josh Allen being a potential target for teams interested in the top three, the Jets seemingly had no interest, via SI's Albert Breer.

When the Jets dealt up to the No. 3 spot in the draft in March, they’d identified three quarterbacks—Darnold, Mayfield, and UCLA’s Josh Rosen—they were good with. This was better than that.

Once Darnold was off the board, Allen was the next quarterback to be taken. The Buffalo Bills chose to take the Wyoming product after trading up to No. 7 from No. 12 to compete with free-agent acquisition A.J. McCarron for the starting job.

Josh Rosen was drafted shortly with the Arizona Cardinals making a trade with the Oakland Raiders for the 10th overall pick to take the UCLA star.

As for the Jets, the team got the quarterback they wanted all along and may have their next face of the franchise in place for the foreseeable future. Darnold received high praise throughout the entire draft process and has been touted by many as potentially the best player at the position in this draft class.
