After 17 years in the NFL, New York Jets quarterback Josh McCown has announced that he will be retiring from the NFL.

In a post shared by the quarterback to The Players’ Tribune, McCown told the story of his early years and entire career, and thanked everyone who made his NFL career possible.

In his message to fans regarding his retirement, McCown noted that even if someone told him how his career would play out, he wouldn’t do many things differently.

“At the end of the day, no matter what team I was on, I tried to serve it to the best of my ability, and I tried to influence my team in a positive manner. I hope I did that. And I made sure that when my number was called, I was prepared, and I gave it everything I had, every time. I may not have turned out to be the franchise quarterback I set out to be back at Cardinals rookie camp, but I’m extremely proud of the career I had.”

McCown noted that he would likely be pursuing either a coaching or broadcasting opportunity in the future, and given his knowledge of the game and how well liked he is, it shouldn’t be tough for him to find work.

Prior to his retirement, the Cleveland Browns did offer him a coaching job a couple of seasons ago, which McCown ended up turning down.

McCown will have spent his final two seasons with the Jets, most of which was spent trying to mentor younger quarterbacks, including Sam Darnold last season.

McCown may not finish out his career as one of the best quarterbacks ever, but he’ll likely go down as one of the most well respected across the league.
