One of the most intriguing quarterback battles in the NFL right now is taking place in training camp for the New York Jets. The recently re-signed veteran Josh McCown is making an impression as he may be well on his way to keeping his job as the starter for the struggling franchise.

According to Jets head coach Todd Bowles, McCown is leading the pack on the quarterback depth chart in New York followed by newcomer Teddy Bridgewater and rookie Sam Darnold, via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

“Josh is one, Teddy [Bridgewater] is two, Sam is three right now,” coach Todd Bowles told reporters on Monday. “That’s what I can tell you.”

Darnold is the star attraction in New York with the expectation being that the long-term job under center is his to lose. Many believe Darnold is the best all-around quarterback coming out of this year's NFL Draft, but he'll have to prove his worth with Bowles reluctant to just hand him the starting job, especially with two other viable options.

“The competition has been underway, it didn’t just start today, it started on Thursday when we reported for camp,” Bowles said. “[Darnold] has got some work to catch up and do so, throughout the course of preseason that will take care of itself and we’ll go from there.”

Although anything can happen between now and Week 1, McCown is the man to beat out in New York for the time being as training camp continues.

McCown is coming off a career year with the Jets in which he passed for 2,926 yards, 18 touchdowns, and nine interceptions in 13 games.
