The New York Jets have undergone some major changes on the defensive end in recent years. However, there is no question that defensive tackle Leonard Williams has established himself as the anchor of this group.

Whether or not New York is hoping to keep it this way remains to be seen. However, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post, Williams is not worried about a looming contract extension:

“The contract’s going to come,” Williams said. “There’s no pressure for it. I’m not like thirsty for it or anything like that. I just want to keep working hard and keep focusing on year by year and just making myself the best possible and helping my team be the best possible, and the money will come.”

Although Williams still has two more years left on his rookie deal, he is eligible for an extension. That said, the Jets are certainly in no rush to get a new deal done and it appears he is not either.

Williams is not the first high-profile defensive lineman New York has had to sign. Unfortunately, recent deals with players like Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson have not gone to plan. As a result, there is some speculation regarding their willingness to pay big money for another defensive lineman.

Fortunately, Williams has proven to be a rather safe bet for the Jets both on and off the field. The former sixth overall pick has registered 178 tackles, 12.0 sacks, two forced fumbles, and an interception in his first three seasons. The Jets will likely gauge all the new deals for this year's slew of star defensive lineman as a measurement for Williams' future extension.
