With the 2018 NFL season drawing to a close for the New York Jets, there is plenty of speculation regarding the potential changes this offseason. Among the notable questions is the future of defensive tackle Leonard Williams.

Williams will be entering the final year of his rookie contract after this season. According to Brian Costello of the New York Post, he is focusing on finishing the year on a high note:

Williams says he “can’t worry about that type of stuff” because all he can “control is my play and the way I carry myself and the way I prepare.”

“I’m not like super-excited about the way it’s been going,” Williams said. “I definitely feel like I’ve been showing flashes of being good and being able to be dominant. I think I just have to work on being consistent and see what it takes to be consistent.”

The Jets selected Williams with the sixth overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft out of USC. New York had already invested several first-round picks on defensive lineman in recent years, however, he is the only one that is still on the team.

His looming contract situation raises questions regarding how much longer that may be the case.

New York was hoping for an immediate impact from Williams and he was able to do just that following a stellar rookie campaign that netted him a trip to the Pro Bowl.

Unfortunately, he has been unable to mirror the type of production he was enjoying two years ago. Williams saw his numbers take a hit in 2017 and he still has yet to recover this season. The Jets could potentially be weighing out whether or not to trade him this offseason
