New York Jets safety Marcus Maye is set to miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn Achilles tendon in Thursday night's loss to the Colts, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

Maye has excelled in run defense this season, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF), something the Jets sorely lacked during Thursday night's beatdown that saw Indianapolis run for over 200 yards on them. Maye is also on a one-year contract and his injury usually takes a full year to heal, throwing his future in New York into uncertainty. He could even conceivably have to wait until training camp or the regular season of 2022 to show that he is fully healthy, a brutal way to enter free agency.

As for his play, aside from the run defense, Maye has not helped the Jets much in any other way. He was very below average according to PFF in both coverage and pass-rush situations, so this is not a huge loss for the defense. To be quite frank, the defense couldn't really get any worse than it already is.

Along with the injury to Maye, the Jets also lost tight end Tyler Kroft to a lung laceration that will likely cost him multiple games and had backup quarterback Mike White knocked from the game. The team is surely hoping to get Zac Wilson back by next week's game against the Buffalo Bills, but judging off how well the backups have played and how good Buffalo's defense is, the Jets may be better off giving the rookie an extra week off to heal.
