Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk lobbied for current New York Jets running back Frank Gore to be enshrined in Canton when he retires.

Faulk said Gore deserves to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame because of his longevity. Via Kyle Madson of USA TODAY.

“If you can have a stellar short career and have some fantastic seasons like guys have had, and you let them in for that, then longevity at the position that we play has to get the same kind of — you have to look at it the same way,” Faulk said. “You have to look at longevity at the position. And here’s the reality — Frank wasn’t a guy that you were platooning. I mean, his days, you know, he was bell cowing it. He’s the down and dirty guy. He’s not the run outside, third-down back. No, he’s your hammer. He’s your hammer. And he’s consistently been that wherever he’s been.”

Gore might not have the accolades possessed by some of his contemporaries. In 15 years, Gore has been named to just four Pro Bowl teams. He has never been named as an All-Pro selection.

At the same time, Gore's numbers tell the whole story.

Gore currently ranks third on the all-time rushing list, behind Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton. But his career yards per carry mark (4.33) actually exceeds that of Smith (4.16) and is just shy of Payton (4.36).

The former Miami star has rushed for over 1,000 yards on nine separate occasions, and he might reach 100 touchdowns this season in New York (Gore currently has 97 total touchdowns).

Gore is hardly the flashiest runner in NFL history, but he has undoubtedly been one of the most effective backs in football since he entered the league in 2005.
