The New York Jets could entertain trade offers for star safety Jamal Adams again leading up to the draft according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Schefter also notes that Adams is not expected to participate in the NFL”s voluntary virtual off-season program which opens later this month.

Adams has noted he wants a contract extension from the team. But the Jets have not made any indications that is the direction they would like to move at this time. Adams has only been in the league three seasons, and from 2011-16, only 15 of the 191 first-round draft picks received extensions at this point in their contract. The only four defensive players to receive them were J.J. Watt, Robert Quinn, Luke Kuechly and Patrick Peterson.

Adams is set to make $3.5 million in 2020 which ranks him 23rd among safeties. This is the last year on his deal, but the team does have a fifth-year option they can pick up.

Jets general manager Joe Douglas said at the NFL combine they had preliminary talks with Adams' agent. But it appears nothing more has been made of those. Douglas also made clear that the plan is Adams to be a Jet for life, but a lot can change in a short period of time, especially in the NFL.

With the NFL draft coming up there could be a lot of communication happening between teams. The Jets could feel like they won't be able to reach a long term deal. Or they could feel like not paying him a big contract extension. If that's the case, it would be the perfect time to move on from him and get top dollar.
