In the wake of his release from the Cincinnati Bengals, veteran signal caller Andy Dalton latched on with the Dallas Cowboys. But before that, he and the New York Jets “flirted” with the idea of him heading to the Big Apple, per Rich Cimini of ESPN.

Cimini goes on to cite that New York’s current options behind starter Sam Darnold are fourth-round rookie James Morgan and David Fales. With the word that there was interest in Dalton, it seems clear that the Jets are in the market for an experienced backup who could step in behind Darnold 00 who has missed three games in each of the past two seasons.

Instead, Dalton heads to Dallas to likely back up Dak Prescott.

But another name has been speculated to join the Jets — Joe Flacco.

“The most obvious candidate is Joe Flacco because of his distant connection to general manager Joe Douglas,” Cimini said. “He was the Baltimore Ravens’ area scout who championed Flacco before he was drafted in 2008. The key with Flacco is his health. He had surgery about six weeks ago to repair a neck injury. He expects to receive a clean bill of health by late August and I’m told he wants to continue playing.”

Flacco is currently a free agent after starting eight games last season for Denver. He is yet to appear in an NFL game as a backup, but his 12 years of experience could be exactly what New York is seeking as a contingency plan for Darnold.
