The New York Jets have been in contact with Quinnen Williams since the defensive lineman was arrested at LaGuardia Aiport for criminal possession of a weapon on Thursday evening, according to the team.

“We have been in contact with Quinnen Williams and are fully aware of the situation,” the Jets said in a statement, via Darin Gantt of ProFootballTalk. “We will have no additional comment as this is a pending legal matter.”

Williams will be formally charged at a court appearance on March 25, according to Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media.

The 22-year-old was carrying a gun with an Alabama permit.

Williams, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was originally selected by the Jets with the third overall pick of the NFL Draft last spring.

He played in 13 games during his rookie campaign and was somewhat disappointing, finishing with 28 tackles, 2.5 sacks and a fumble recovery.

The Birmingham native spent two years at Alabama, arriving at the school in 2017 and logging 20 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and a couple of sacks in his freshman season. The following season, Williams put himself on the map as one of the top defensive line prospects in the country, racking up 71 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss and eight sacks.

New York was expected by some to be a playoff contender in 2019, but the club got off to a dreadful 1-7 start and finished 7-9. To be fair, the Jets were ravaged by injuries, but it was clear that even if they were healthy, they were not making the postseason.
