The New York Jets have announced that they’ve officially hired Dowell Loggains as their new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Loggains, 38, will be reunited with new Jets coach Adam Gase. The two worked together last season with the Miami Dolphins.

The Jets will already be Loggains’ fourth offensive coordinator job in just over 10 years in the league. Aside from the Dolphins, he had previous stints as the OC for the Tennessee Titans (2012-13) and the Chicago Bears (2016-17).

He will also be New York's fourth offensive coordinator in as many years, following Chan Gailey, John Morton, and Jeremy Bates, who served under previous head coach Todd Bowles.

The Dolphins finished 26th in scoring under Gase and Loggains last season at just under 20 points per game. The Jets under Jeremy Bates were 23rd at 20.8 PPG.

Loggains will look to help Gase get the best out of young Jets quarterback Sam Darnold. Darnold completed 58 percent of his passes for 17 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 13 games for the Jets. He showed flashes of the talent which made him the No. 3 overall pick in last year’s draft during his rookie season.

However, he still needs to build better consistency to become a top QB. He’ll also need significant upgrades at the skill positions, which the Jets front office must address in the draft and free agency this offseason.

The Jets will need to surround Darnold with more adequate talent to put both him and the Gase/Loggains combo in a position to succeed during their tenure in New York.
