New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh is convinced: backup QB Mike White is ready to take over the team in place of the injured rookie signal-caller Zach Wilson.

When Wilson went down with a knee injury during their Week 7 game against the New England Patriots, the Jets immediately took action by trading for Joe Flacco from the Philadelphia Eagles. The general expectations were the veteran would be starting for the team moving forward as they await for Wilson's return, but that doesn't seem to be the case now.

After White's sensational performance for the Jets on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals–throwing for 405 yards (37-of-45 pass completion) for three touchdowns in his first career start–Saleh has made the decision to start him again next week.

The Jets play the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday, and it should be another good test for Mike White to show what he is capable of. While taking down the then top-seeded Bengals is no easy feat, the 26-year-old knows very well he needs to play more consistently if he wants to take over the starting spot.

Fortunately for him, he has opened the door for himself to get the chance he needs. And by the looks of it, he is more than ready to prove himself.

“In my mind I knew I was capable of running this offense,” the Jets QB said after their 34-31 win over the Bengals, per Al Iannazzone of Newsday Sports.

It remains to be seen when Wilson will be able to return from injury, but he is certainly facing some tough competition when he returns.
