According to a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN, the New York Jets have indeed utilized the team's franchise tag this time around, using it on safety Marcus Maye.

The deadline for NFL organizations to use their respective franchise tags is set for Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. Eastern Time.

The 27-year-old Marcus Maye was originally selected by the New York franchise in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Florida. Spending his entire four-year professional playing career as a member of the Jets, Maye will now either play out the upcoming 2021 campaign under the parameters of the franchise or come to terms with the team on a long-term contract before the mid-summer deadline.

Maye has notably appeared in all 16 regular season games for the Jets in three of his four seasons atop the highest level. Over the course of the 2020 campaign, the veteran defensive back tallied a single-season career-high 88 total tackles to coincide with his two sacks, two forced fumbles, two interceptions and 11 pass defenses.

Only getting better during his time with the Jets, it is hardly a surprise that “Gang Green” is looking to keep Maye around for a bit longer. With current Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams no longer in the fold in East Rutherford and New York recently hiring a defensive-minded head coach in Robert Saleh, Maye can certainly be considered as one of the team's defensive cornerstones moving forward.
