The New York Jets have placed a few veteran players on the “Physically Unable to Perform” (PUP) list, including quarterback Joe Flacco.

Flacco, 35, underwent neck surgery before inking a deal with the Jets during the offseason. At the time of signing, he admitted he wasn't sure when he'd be ready to play. Clearly, he still has a ways to go before he can get on the field.

If Flacco can stay healthy—a major “if”—the Super Bowl XLVII MVP will back up Sam Darnold. Even if Flacco remains sidelined, the Jets hope his presence and experience will help their young quarterback make strides in Darnold's third season. The team also has David Fales (48 career passing attempts) and 2020 fourth-round pick James Morgan on the roster.

Linebacker Avery Williamson was also placed on the PUP list. Williamson—expected to be a key cog in the middle of the defense—tore his ACL before the 2019 season and missed the entire campaign. Tight end Ryan Griffin joined the PUP list, too.

There are two types of PUP lists players can be placed on: the Reserve/PUP list, which keeps requires a player to sit out for the first eight weeks of the season, and the Active/PUP list that prohibits players to from participating in training camp, but allows them to be activated at any point during the season. Flacco, Williamson, and Griffin were placed on the latter list as they each continue rehabbing injuries.

These roster moves are largely precautionary, as only Flacco is considered a potential question mark to be ready for Week 1.

The Jets open their season on Sept. 13 at the Buffalo Bills.
