The New York Jets were able to shore up some cap space after releasing cornerback Trumaine Johnson. It seems they have already out it to good use.

According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the Jets have signed Poole to a one-year, $5 million guaranteed deal for the 2020 NFL season:

It is no secret that the secondary has been a point of emphasis for New York this offseason. Securing Poole for another year will provide a boost to the secondary for another year while they continue to try and spark a potential resurgence next season.

Poole came into the league as an undrafted free agent with the Atlanta Falcons prior to the 2016 campaign. He eventually established an integral role for himself in Atlanta before signing a one-year with the Jets in free agency last offseason.

Although his skill set is primarily that of a slot defender, he wound up playing more snaps than any other cornerback on the roster during the 2019 NFL season and wound up finishing with 59 tackles, five pass defenses, and an interception that he returned for a touchdown.

Poole's return to New York helps to serve as a stabilizing factor for this rebuilding secondary that is still in the midst of some significant changes. He will have another year to show that he is more than deserving of a long-term deal in the near future.

Meanwhile, the departure of Johnson still leaves a rather notable void for the team to fill on the outside this offseason either through free agency or the 2020 NFL Draft.
