The New York Jets managed to shore up some much-needed firepower in the receiving corps by taking Denzel Mims in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. It appears the rookie has already managed to make quite the impression on his coaching staff.

The restrictions placed in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic have come with its own set of challenges for rookies trying to get accustomed to life in the NFL. According to Robby Sabo of the Jets X factor, this has not prevented Mims from earning some high praise from Jets receivers coach Shawn Jefferson:

“He’s a really good person, first of all. Very mature for his age. He picks up things well. Brings speed along with the uncanny ability to make contested catches.”

It is encouraging to see that Mims is handling the transition well ahead of the 2020 NFL season. After all, he could very well be tasked with taking on an integral role in the passing game for the Jets right out of the gate.

New York has put an emphasis on fortifying the supporting cast around quarterback Sam Darnold. Although they made some notable improvements along the offensive line, it remains to be seen which of the new receivers will emerge as a safety net for Darnold.

Mims will be operating alongside wide receivers Brashad Perriman and Josh Dcotson after they were picked up in free agency. Fortunately, it is safe to say that the coaches are already paying close attention to what the rookie brings to the table.
