The New York Jets chose to let Robby Anderson walk in free agency this past offseason, allowing him to sign with the Carolina Panthers. While Anderson continues to thrive in Carolina, Joe Douglas — the GM of the Jets — shared that he regrets letting Anderson leave in free agency.

“I thought about Robby a lot,” Douglas told local reporters, via Alaina Getzenberg of the Charlotte Observer. “I thought our guys did a fantastic job of really analyzing every position group’s market value, leading up to free agency last year, and I think what went wrong with us … we thought that Robby’s value was going to be even greater than what he signed for in Carolina. And so I think that’s on me, ultimately, and that’s on us moving forward to get a better handle on every player’s market value.

Through his first eight games with the Panthers, Anderson has hauled in 51 receptions for 688 yards and a touchdown. The former wide receiver of the Jets is on pace to finish with career-highs in receptions (102) and receiving yards (1,376).

Douglas expressed his support in Anderson showing his skillset with his new team in 2020.

“Honestly, we would all love to see Robby here doing what he’s doing. But I tip my hat to the success he has, but obviously we don’t want to be in the business of losing good players.”

Before he entered free agency, it was reported that New York could retain Anderson due to a watered-down market at wide receiver. However, Matt Rhule — Anderson's former coach at Temple and new head coach in Carolina — was an enticing factor in him joining the Panthers.

While the Jets are thin at wide receiver, relying on unproven talents, Anderson is excelling in his new uniform this season.
