In typical New York Jets fashion, the franchise is sending mixed signals on quarterback Sam Darnold and his future with the club.

During his media session with reporters on Tuesday, Jets general manager Joe Douglas wouldn't commit to Darnold being the starting quarterback next season.

Just a few minutes later, though, Douglas called Darnold the Jets' “quarterback of the future.”

The Jets are the only winless team in the NFL. All signs point to the team landing the first overall pick in the 2021 draft.

Assuming he leaves school after this season, Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence is projected to be the first quarterback taken in the 2021 draft. The youngster, who recently contracted COVID-19, has been dubbed as the Jets' savior already by many in New York and he hasn't even been drafted by the team yet.

The Jets took Sam Darnold with the third overall pick in the 2018 draft out of USC. The 23-year-old has thrown 39 touchdowns and 34 interceptions in 32 NFL games. He is only completing 59.7 percent of his passes as well.

Now, it doesn't help that Darnold's coach is Adam Gase, who is widely considered the worst coach in the NFL. However, Darnold hasn't really helped his cause by being a turnover machine since entering the pros.

It's going to be fascinating to see what happens to Darnold moving forward. New York will probably look to trade him if they go ahead and draft Lawrence.
