The New York Jetswho know that franchise offensive tackle Mekhi Becton is far from 100-percent healthy — gained some insurance on Friday. Gang Green signed former Washington Football Team tackle Morgan Moses to a one-year, $3.6 million deal to provide depth on the offensive line.

Jets Wire's Tyler Greenawalt said the following one week ago, on June 17:

The Jets have had their eyes on Moses ever since a foot injury sidelined starting left tackle Mekhi Becton.

Now the Jets have sealed the deal with Moses, creating needed depth for a unit which will be asked to keep franchise quarterback Zach Wilson clean in the pocket.

Jets insiders generally think that most of the spots on the 2021 offensive line are spoken for. Becton, if healthy enough by Week 1 in September, will play left tackle. First-round draft pick Alijah Vera-Tucker will play left guard. Connor McGovern will line up at center.

The right side of the offensive line is the source of greater uncertainty for the Jets. Moses could now slot in at right tackle instead of George Fant. Alex Lewis and Greg Van Roten are also part of the mix at right guard. The team might not keep both Lewis and Van Roten on the opening day roster.

Moses could be an upgrade from Fant, but the bigger picture for the Jets is that they now have three tackles they can work with: Moses, Fant, and Becton. If one (Becton) is injured, the other two can start on opposite sides of the line. This gives first-year head coach Robert Saleh more flexibility in his quest to protect Wilson and give the Jets' biggest investment every possible chance of succeeding in his rookie year.
