Just two years after going 10-6 to nearly make the playoffs, expectations for the New York Jets have plummeted. Their top talent has aged and their younger guys haven't developed as they'd hoped, leading to many pundits picking them to finish with one of the worst records in the NFL.

One of the few veterans who appears to still have quite a bit left in the tank is former Chicago Bears running back, Matt Forte. While splitting carries with Bilal Powell in 2016, Forte managed to pile up 813 yards rushing and 263 through the air, scoring a total of eight touchdowns. While he might not be able to stay on the field for an entire drive, his production when used hasn't diminished.

Given his value, the Jets are hoping they can find a willing trade partner on the open market. From Tom Pelissero of NFL Media:

Jets have gauged trade market for RB Matt Forte, who’s healthy now, per sources. But it’d be very tough to move his $4M guaranteed salary.

By the time the Jets revamp their roster and hope to compete again, Forte will likely be out of the league. As a result, it makes sense for New York to move him to pick up an asset. But, as Pelissero notes, his contract could be a hurdle too large for interested organizations.

If they're unable to deal him away, the Jets could consider waiving Forte to provide Powell and rookie Elijah McGuire with more carries.
