On Wednesday night, the New York Jets decided to go with Adam Gase as their new head coach over Super Bowl champion coach Mike McCarthy, formerly of the Green Bay Packers. McCarthy's head coaching record is 135–85–2 compared to Gase's 23–25, but Gase is widely considered to be one of football's best young offensive minds. So a Super Bowl and a very solid record wasn't enough for the Jets to officially make a move on McCarthy.

Instead, they went with the offensive guru who had the backing of the legendary quarterback Peyton Manning. The news Wednesday must sting for McCarthy, who was only considering the Jets as his next coaching position. Manning is one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game of football, and it seems as if his recommendation was enough to convince Jets CEO Christopher Johnson to make it official.

The position will be Gase's second head coaching job in the NFL. He was first an offensive coordinator with Manning's Denver Broncos, beginning in 2013. Gase was in Denver for two years, and then went to Chicago to help Jay Cutler as the Bears' OC in 2015. The Miami Dolphins hired Gase away from the Bears as their head coach before the 2016 season, and over the last three seasons he led Miami to just one winning season.

This is a crucial hire for the Jets, as they believe they have found their franchise quarterback in Sam Darnold and need a coach to groom him to someday become one of the NFL's best. Manning seems to believe in coach Gase's system, and so the Jets will take a gamble on the 40-year-old.
