New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles still hasn’t made a final decision as to who among Sam Darnold, Teddy Bridgewater, and Josh McCown will be named the team’s starting quarterback. Although, he claims he has a “good idea” about it. The Jets players seem to know where their coach is leaning toward, too.

Per Rich Cimini of ESPN, two Jets players said the expectation within the locker room is that Darnold will eventually get the job.

“You kind of know where the flow is going,” one player said.

It’s been talked about for some time that despite Darnold’s placement on the depth chart, the starting job was his to lose. As long as he avoided any disastrous outings and showed he could play at a competent enough level in preseason, he’d be their man.

And based on his three solid preseason outings, it seems as though he’s done enough to prove that he’s ready to be thrown into the deep end even as a rookie.

The Jets have just too much invested in Darnold to sit him if he didn’t need to. He’s clearly the future of the franchise, and it makes little sense for him to wait in line behind McCown and Bridgewater instead of going out and gaining experience right away.

Ultimately, it’s Bowles decision whether Darnold gets to start. But barring some stunning twist, the expected outcome that people both inside and outside the Jets locker room can sense is that the rookie will be starting in Week 1.
