New York Jets defensive lineman Quinnen Williams was arrested at LaGuardia Airport on a criminal weapons possession charge on Thursday night.

Friday morning, his attorney, Alex Spiro, released a statement:

“Mr. Williams respects and follows the law,” said Spiro, via Williams' agent, Nicole Lynn. “There was allegedly a technical issue with the manner in which the lawfully owned firearm was stored – and we expect the matter to be resolved shortly.”

Williams was carrying a gun with an Alabama permit.

The 22-year-old will be formally charged in a court appearance on March 25, according to Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media.

Williams, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was originally selected by the Jets with the third overall pick of the NFL Draft last spring.

He played in 13 games during his rookie campaign and was somewhat disappointing, finishing with 28 total tackles, 2.5 sacks and a fumble recovery.

The Birmingham native spent two seasons at Alabama, arriving at the school in 2017 and logging 20 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and a couple of sacks in his freshman year. The following season, Williams put himself on the map as one of the top defensive line prospects in the country, rattling off 71 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss and eight sacks.

New York was expected by some to be a playoff contender in 2019, but the Jets got off to a woeful 1-7 start and finished the season with a record of 7-9.

The Jets have not made the playoffs since the 2010 season, when they made it to their second of back-to-back AFC Championship Games.
