The New York Jets put an emphasis on shoring up the supporting cast around quarterback Sam Darnold. Regardless, they are hoping to rely on a familiar face in wide receiver Robby Anderson to take that next step.

While Anderson has proven to be a bonafide deep threat, there are still concerns about him being rather one-dimensional. According to Connor Hughes of The Athletic, the Jets are having him expand his route tree in the offense:

The jury’s still out on if Robby Anderson will develop into a legitimate No. 1 wideout. But he’ll certainly be used as more than a one-trick pass-catcher this season. His route tree was nothing more than a stick his first three seasons: go deep. Now, there are a few more branches. The Jets used Anderson on screens, ins, outs, comebacks, posts and flags, in addition to his signature go route, during camp. He’s found success on each.

There is no question Anderson is more than capable of taking the top off the opposing defense, however, the time has come for him to add some more versatility to his game. His rare blend of size and speed make him a dangerous weapon on offense and the Jets are doing what they can to utilize it.

It remains to be seen whether or not the 26-year-old can display the kind of consistency New York is looking for in a No. 1 wideout. The arrival of running back Le'Veon Bell and the additions to the offensive line should pay huge dividends for Darnold in the 2019 NFL season.

Anderson will have an opportunity to reap the benefits of the second-year's quarterback's improvement. He will be competing with wide receiver Quincy Enunwa for the lion's share of targets heading into the regular season.
