It looks like New York Jets fans might have to wait a little longer to see wide receiver Denzel Mims’ debut for the franchise.

Ahead of the Jets’ season opener against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, head coach Adam Gase has said that the rookie wideout’s hamstring injury will likely keep him out of the game, with a stint on the injured reserved (IR) list looming as a possibility.

Gase said that he will talk to Jets General Manager Joe Douglas about the prospect of putting Mims on the IR, according to The Athletic’s Conor Hughes. It appears that Mims injured his other hamstring in practice after earlier suffering and recovering from an injury to his other hamstring.

The Jets’ coach, meanwhile, couldn’t help but feel bad for his young player, especially after the progress that he’s made coming back from a previous injury, according to SNY’s Ralph Vacciano.

“I feel like s— for him because I feel like he worked really hard to get back, and for it to be the other hamstring … I hate seeing it happen to him like that.”

The 22-year-old Mims was selected by the Jets in the second round with the 59th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. The Jets, meanwhile, are coming off a 7-9 season in Gase’s first season as head coach, and the team is looking to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2010, when they made it all the way to the AFC title game.

If Mims is unable to make his professional debut, the Jets will likely turn to wideouts Breshad Perriman, Jamison Crowder, Chris Hogan, and Braxton Berrios against the Bills.
