The NFL is riddled with inspiring stories of players overcoming insurmountable odds to achieve their dreams of playing in the league. A prime example of that is New York Jets defensive tackle Nathan Shepherd.

During his unorthodox journey to the NFL, he met former wide receiver Nate Burleson who inspired him to stick to playing football. Shepherd was able to thank Burleson for his motivational words during an appearance on  Good Morning Football:

“Nate, you were actually the first NFL player I ever met,” Shepherd said. “Before the night was over you said I was gonna make it to the league. You gave me a $100 bill and said, ‘Here’s a little advance on your signing bonus.’ I’ve never forgotten that,” Shepherd told Burleson.

Shepherd grew up in Canada and played college ball at Simon Fraser University. Unfortunately, he was forced to take a brief hiatus from football due to his financial situation at the time. In fact, it was during one of his gigs as a bouncer that Shepherd met Burleson at a club and the two had the exchange.

It appears Burleson's gut feeling was right all along. Shepherd managed to bounce back at Fort Hays State where he flourished on an athletic scholarship. He was named MAIA Defensive Player of the Year before being taken by New York in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Needless to say, it is not often one can draw inspiration from a night at the club. However, Shepherd's experience just goes to show how even the smallest interaction can go a long way in helping make someone's dreams come true.
