The New York Jets have had a disappointing season in Adam Gase's first year as head coach and it got even worse this past Sunday. After leaving Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Jamal Adams could miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury.

“I’m not going to get out there until I’m myself,” Adams said on Wednesday, via Manish Mehta of The New York Daily News. “I don’t know when that is. We’re not going to put a timetable on it. But we’re just continue to do whatever they ask me to do and go from there.”

It's uncertain what the official diagnosis of the injury is. Gase is adamant that it isn't a high-ankle sprain. Regardless of the extent of the injury, the coach understands that he has to be cautious with his Pro-Bowl safety.

“It probably could have been a lot worse than what it was,” said Adam Gase, who clarified that his star safety did not suffer a high-ankle sprain. “I really think we just have to be very smart with this. I’ve talked to him. He’s got to really feel good for me to put him back out there.”

Considering that New York is 4-8 and out of the playoff race, sitting Adams may be the smartest choice. But with Adams being the competitor he is, there's still a chance he could return to the field before the season concludes.

Before the injury, Adams was having another spectacular year, tallying 64 tackles, eight tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, a pick-six and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. The loss of Adams on the Jets' defense will be felt as they look to finish the season on a high note.
