New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold will not play this weekend due to continued pain in his right shoulder.

However, the 23-year-old is trending in the right direction, and head coach Adam Gase said Darnold is on track to possibly play in Week 12 against the Miami Dolphins:

“He’s doing good,” Gase said, via video from Ralph Vacchiano of SNY. “I think he’s feeling better. I think we’ve got a good shot for the next game. He’s progressing the right direction. We’ll just kind of see how this weekend goes and how he feels Monday, Tuesday. We’ll be able to know on Wednesday.”

The Jets were hoping this was the year Darnold took a big leap and officially established himself as the franchise quarterback. Alas, it has not happened.

Darnold struggled to move the ball in his first few games. He then suffered the shoulder injury in a Week 4 loss to the Denver Broncos. Darnold would miss each of the next two games before returning in Week 7, but more bad fortune awaited him in his return.

The former USC star was sacked six times in a loss to the Buffalo Bills, and his 31.1 quarterback rating his the lowest of the season. Darnold and the Jets had no chance in Week 8 against the Kansas City Chiefs, and he has been out ever since.

Joe Flacco will start in Darnold's place this weekend after he nearly helped the Jets upset the New England Patriots in Week 9. Meanwhile, the Jets will wait and see how Darnold feels before making a determination on his status next week.

One thing appears to be looming for Darnold and the winless Jets: a new quarterback might be on the horizon, especially if New York lands the No. 1 overall pick.
