The New York Jets have had an ongoing competition for the starting job at the quarterback position over the NFL offseason that has led into training camp and the preseason.

Throughout the process, rookie Sam Darnold has continued to make headway into garnering some serious consideration toward earning the starting gig. According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, head coach Todd Bowles has stated that the USC product isn't too much behind both Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater in the competition.

The Jets have remained firm in the process that Darnold will get every chance to prove that he can earn the starting job outright ahead of the 2018 regular season. This should see him get plenty of opportunities to showcase that in training camp and the preseason.

Much of this will likely depend on how he performs on the field in the preseason against live action will show how much progress he has made in his development and his understanding of the playbook. If he can also show that he is the most effective option of the three that can lead the team to put up points on the board.

There is still plenty of time for Darnold to make up that space, which makes these comments from Bowles potentially promising for his chances to secure the starting job.
