Sam Darnold will not be the New York Jets’ starting quarterback for Week 10 against the Buffalo Bills. But it’s not because of the rookie’s recent struggles.

Instead, Darnold is set to miss out due to a significant foot sprain which has him wearing a walking boot on his right foot, per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

The Jets announced that Darnold was not practicing Wednesday, which clearly wasn’t a good sign for his availability on Sunday.

Darnold suffered the injury during the Jets’ 13-6 defeat to the Miami Dolphins. He said after the game that he was “fine” although he also admitted he was “dinged up.”

Darnold turned in the most disastrous performance of his young career against the Dolphins as he threw a career-high four interceptions.

Darnold has been struggling significantly for the past few weeks. He’s completing just 47 percent of his passes for 588 yards with two touchdowns and seven interceptions in his last three games, all Jets losses.

With Darnold out, the Jets must now turn to veteran Josh McCown to start against the Bills. McCown, who hasn’t made an appearance this year, started 13 games for the Jets last season. He completed 67 percent of his passes for 2,926 yards with 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

McDown threw for 327 yards with three touchdowns (one passing, two rushing) and two interceptions in two games against the Bills.

The Jets will have their bye after the Bills game and face the Patriots at home the week after that. But despite the extra time off, the Jets are not overly optimistic that Darnold can make a full recovery from his injury by then.
