New York Jets Sam Darnold is set to make NFL history when he becomes the youngest quarterback to start in the modern era. The rookie is doing what he can to stay focused on the main task at hand.

Darnold is undoubtedly excited to get an immediate start on his career. According to Darryl Slater of NJ.com, he is well aware that success in the NFL is hardly ever set in stone:

“It's going to be a really fun first start for me in the NFL,” he said. “But at the same time, I know that I have a long way to go this week. I know just because I got named the starter doesn't mean we won the game Monday night.”

It is clear that Darnold is taking a modest approach to the 2018 NFL season. However, he has good reason to be proud of his transition thus far. Although he had been dubbed as the most talented quarterback in the draft, there were still some concerns about his small sample size at USC. As a result, there was speculation that he was the least NFL-ready of all the quarterbacks in his class.

Needless to say, those draft reports missed the mark on this one. Not only is Darnold slated to become the youngest starting quarterback in modern history, but he is also the only one from the 2018 NFL Draft that has managed to secure the job to start this campaign. It should also be noted that he beat out two other viable quarterbacks in Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater in order to do it.

Darnold certainly has his work cut out for him in the season opener when the Jets hit the road to take on the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football.
