The New York Jets had a reason to be skeptical about the status of quarterback Sam Darnold for their Week 12 matchup versus the New England Patriots. Unfortunately, the latest update all but confirms he may be sidelined on Sunday.

Darnold has been unable to practice all week due to a foot injury. According to Dennis Waszak Jr. of The Washington Post, his lack of participation indicates that he will sit out against the Patriots:

Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold sat out team drills for a second straight day of practice, increasing the likelihood he’ll sit out against New England on Sunday.

Darnold strained his foot versus the Miami Dolphins in Week 10. As a result, he was forced to sit out the next game versus the Buffalo Bills. The recent update certainly deals a crushing blow to Darnold's chances at a potential resurgence. He had already been struggling to find a rhythm as it is. Now it appears the foot injury will be a cause for concern moving forward. Quarterback Josh McCown will likely start in Darnold's place once again.

It is no secret that Darnold has endured a rough rookie campaign. However, his struggles are largely indicative of New York's massive shortcomings this year. The fact that the rookie is a bit of a gunslinger certainly does not help when it comes to taking care of the ball.

Regardless, the Jets are seemingly all in on Sam Darnold going through his growing pains this year, just not at the price of his long-term health. A divisional showdown versus the Patriots would not have been the best of circumstances to return under anyway.
