The New York Jets are placing the future of their franchise in the hands of quarterback Sam Darnold. But the former third overall pick will need to clean up his efficiency in the play-action game if he hopes to make strides in his third season.

According to QB Data Mine, Darnold was the worst play-action quarterback in football in 2019, completing under 44 percent of his passes from this play call.

Perhaps it is not much of a surprise Darnold struggled to deliver good balls out of play-action sets. After all, the Jets failed to establish a running game all season.

The Jets ranked 31st in rushing yards and last in the NFL in yards per carry last season. New York brought in star running back Le'Veon Bell to be a difference-maker on the ground and as a receiver out of the backfield, but Bell averaged a woeful 3.2 yards per carry behind a rather unstable offensive line.

Pro Football Focus ranked New York's offensive line 28th in football last season, citing the fact they averaged a league-worst 0.7 rushing yards before contact.

Jets GM Joe Douglas attempted to address the offensive line this offseason. They likes of George Fant and Brandon Shell. New York also selected former Louisville offensive tackle Mekhi Becton with their first-round pick.

All this is to say Darnold might stand to benefit from an improved run game. He showed improvement in his sophomore campaign, completing a higher percentage of passes (61.9) while also throwing more touchdowns (19) and fewer interceptions (13).

Darnold should continue to make strides if he can become a more accurate passer in play-action sets.
