New York Jets running back Bilal Powell is on injured reserve and out for the season after sustaining a neck injury last week which will require surgery. There was even a fear that it might potentially be a career-ending injury.

However, Jets head coach Todd Bowles has put a halt to that sort of talk as he clarified that Powell’s injury isn’t as serious as some might believe.

“It was just a misunderstanding of things,” Bowles said Thursday, via Howie Kussoy of the New York Post. “He’s expected to recover fully.”

Powell was injured on a second-quarter run against the Minnesota Vikings last Sunday after sustaining a hit from Vikings linebacker Eric Kendricks. He left the game after the play and did not return.

Bowles said the injury is the same one sustained by Jets receiver Quincy Enunwa last season. Enunwa successfully returned this season and had been playing well prior to sustaining a significant ankle injury a few weeks ago.

Powell, 30, has spent his entire eight-year NFL career with the Jets. He has carried 791 times for 3,446 yards and caught 204 passes for 1,567 yards while scoring 20 total touchdowns. And in seven games this season, he picked up 343 rushing yards on 80 carries while adding 110 receiving yards on 11 catches.

It’s certainly great news that Powell’s injury isn’t likely to threaten his career, especially since he's an impending free agent. Hopefully, he can make a full recovery as expected and head into the offseason as healthy as possible so he can land a new contract.
