New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold has lit it up in the preseason thus far. While it is still far too early to tell, his performance helped solidify the praise he received from former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

Romo was not shy about his opinion on Darnold's status atop this year's quarterback class. According to Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media, he is still confident the rookie has a bright future ahead of him:

“When I watch him, I see a lot of God-given, instinctual ability that I think is rare,” Romo said. “I think whether he comes out on fire or comes out average, I don't really think it matters, to me, about his future. I think he's going to be outstanding.”

Romo added that although Darnold will endure his fair share of growing pains, he has some serious star potential.

“I think he's going to be really good,” Romo said. “I think it's just a matter of him going through it. He'll have good weeks and he'll have bad weeks. But I think you're seeing the flashes already, and you'll see those in the regular season as well.

Romo's comments should come as no surprise. He has sung Darnold's praises ever since he was still playing at USC. Although Darnold was widely considered the most naturally-gifted of all the quarterbacks in his class, some feel he is still a few years away from becoming a bonafide starter due to his age and small sample size in college. However, it is clear that Romo believes otherwise.

Fortunately, Darnold has confirmed this notion by skyrocketing to the top of the depth chart this preseason. Perhaps even more impressive is that he has managed to outshine the other two legitimate quarterbacks on the roster in Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater.

There is no telling how many games the Jets will win this year. However, Darnold will get the opportunity to confirm Romo's praise.
