The 2018 NFL season did not go as planned for New York Jets cornerback Trumaine Johnson. Fortunately, he is looking forward to a fresh start under the new regime.

The Jets have made some significant changes this offseason. According to Bryan Costello of the New York Post, Johnson is happy to have another chance to prove himself:

“Last year was last year and that was my fault for sure,” Johnson said. “A clean slate is definitely good for me.”

There is no question that a clean slate will do Johnson plenty of good. He made headlines last offseason when he signed a lucrative five-year deal with the Jets. Unfortunately, he failed to justify the signing after struggling mightily throughout the 2018 campaign. A combination of poor play and injury led to him registering 40 tackles and four interceptions in 10 games.

Fortunately, Gase does not seem to be too overly concerned with what transpired in New York last season. He has already indicated that all players on the current roster will be given a chance to prove they can become an integral part of the team. For Johnson, that means reclaiming his spot as the top cornerback on defense.

There is certainly good reason for Johnson to be optimistic about a potential resurgence in the 2019 NFL season. He is reunited with his former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. The veteran enjoyed his best years while playing under Williams while the two were with the Los Angeles Rams. It will be interesting to see if Johnson can get back on track.
