The New York Jets managed to fortify their secondary this offseason with the additions of cornerback Trumaine Johnson and safety J.J. Wilcox. Needless to say, safety Jamal Adams has high expectations for his unit in the 2018 NFL season.

There is a newfound sense of optimism surrounding the team this offseason. According to Zach Braziller of the New York Post, Adams feels this secondary can be as talented as any:

“I believe in us, man, simple as that,” Adams said. “I believe in us in that room. We work hard. Everybody works hard in the National Football League, but I think that we have something special about this group.”

Johnson doubled down on Adams' comments by striving to be the best in the league, via Darryl Slater NJ.com:

“To be the best secondary in the league, to be honest,” Johnson said.

It is encouraging to see that this Jets' secondary is not short of confidence. However, it is still a bold statement nonetheless.

There are a number of teams that are chalk-full of talented defensive backs. The Jacksonville Jaguars likely established themselves as the gold standard after a stellar 2017 campaign. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Rams have managed to gather a bevy of stars in their secondary this offseason.

Speaking of the Rams, Johnson was able to establish himself as a legitimate No. 1 corner during his tenure with the team. Meanwhile, the emergence of Adams of over the top gives New York plenty of reasons to be optimistic going into this season.
