The New York Jets managed to add some serious firepower to their backfield this offseason. It seems running back Ty Montgomery has already established a role for himself in the offense ahead of the start of the preseason.

Montgomery has always been caught between two positions throughout his career. According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, he is enjoying his hybrid role in New York.

“He’s (Gase) not really struggling with are you a running back or are you a receiver?” Montgomery told the Daily News. “When we have conversations, he just says, ‘You’re a football player. I know what you can do as a route runner and I know what you can do running the ball.’ He doesn’t seem to be trying to figure out whether I’m a running back or you’re a receiver. I feel like a true hybrid in this offense.”

Although most of the attention has been fixed on the arrival of running back Le'Veon Bell, head coach Adam Gase has not overlooked the kind of impact Montgomery is capable of making on the offense. His versatility as both a runner and receiver will allow the Jets to experiment and plug him in anywhere they see fit.

There is no question that Montgomery is coming off a rocky 2018 campaign. Fortunately, it appears the Jets have embraced his hybrid skill set and intend to utilize in the 2019 NFL season. While Bell may be slated to receive most of the love coming out of the backfield, Montgomery could still see a healthy dose of touches in this offense moving forward.
